Every year around the first weekend in April a long 4 day weekend arise because of Taiwan culture .This year 2026 , April 3 – April 6, 2026, is a major four-day holiday in Taiwan, combining Children’s Day and the Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day) not the same with any western religion (Christianity etc) . While it is a time of deep tradition, it has also evolved into Taiwan’s unofficial "Spring Break," filled with music festivals, outdoor adventures, and family outings. Just like Spring break in america, Canada and other countries , many schools are on break so many festivals arise in this time to fill in the gap.
when you come to Taiwan during the February march time you’ve would noticed the various holidays and school breaks and many places getting crowded and the energy shifting, it’s because Spring Break has officially arrived. This four-day weekend (April 3–6) is one of the most culturally significant times of the year, blending the ancient customs of the Qingming Festival with the modern hype of Taiwan's massive spring festivals.
Falling on April 5 (observed on April 6 this year), the Qingming Festival is a time for families to return to their hometowns to honor their ancestors.
The Rituals: Families visit ancestral graves to "sweep" and tidy the tombstones, remove weeds, and offer food, incense, and "spirit money".
Symbolism: The name Qingming means "clear and bright," marking the start of warm spring weather and a time for renewal.
Outdoor Fun: Beyond the rituals, it is traditional to go on "spring outings" (Taqing), fly kites, and enjoy the blossoming nature before the summer heat hits.
For many students and expats, this weekend is less about sweeping and more about the music. Taiwan’s "Spring Break" is famous for its festival scene.
Megaport Festival (Kaohsiung): While the main dates were in late March, the energy usually spills over into the holiday week, making Kaohsiung a top destination for indie and rock fans.
Dapeng Bay Marine Festival: Starting on April 1, this Pingtung festival is Taiwan's largest sailing event, featuring yachting competitions and captain experiences—perfect for those heading south.
Taipei Flower Power: If you're staying in the city, the Yangmingshan Flower Festival and Taipei Rose Festival are in full bloom, offering a perfect "Taqing" experience without leaving the capital.
If sweeping tombs isn't on your agenda and you want to escape out of taipei , you’re likely heading south. The real "Spring Break" energy is concentrated in a few massive coastal hubs: Cijin Beach in Kaohsiung and Kenting in Pingtung and Waiao in yilan.
This is the spiritual successor to the legendary "Spring Scream."
The Scale: Held at the Kenting Dawan Recreation Area from April 3 to April 5, 2026, this is a massive, free three-day festival featuring over 120 bands across five stages.
The 2026 Lineup: This year is stacked with heavy hitters like Crowd Lu (盧廣仲), Nick Chou (周湯豪), and Japanese rockers ROTTENGRAFFTY, plus indie favorites like Fire EX. and deca joins.
The Vibe: It’s all about sun, sand, and independent music. Because it's free, it attracts a huge crowd of students and young professionals from all over the island.
If you want something a bit more "international" and rowdy, the Cijin Sunset Bar is the place to be.
Happy-Mess Colour Party: On April 5, 2026, Cijin Beach transforms into a Caribbean-themed explosion of light and color.
The Experience: It’s an interactive human body-painting party where you get blasted with water-based neon paints while DJs spin tropical and electronic tracks right on the sand.
The "Bling" Finale: This serves as the grand finale to the Spring Bling Festival, making Cijin the go-to spot for those who want a "Miami-style" spring break experience in Taiwan.
If Kenting is too far and Kaohsiung is too crowded, the "in-the-know" crowd heads to Waiao Beach in Yilan. Just a short train ride from Taipei, this is where the surf culture and the expat party scene collide for the annual Drifters Spring Break Bash. It's a lot closer so you can go and come each day and don't have to worry about expensive hostels rents and traveling expensises.
The Music: Expect a curated mix of international DJs and local live bands playing everything from reggae and funk to house and rock. It’s a much more intimate, "family-style" party compared to the massive stages in Kenting.
The Atmosphere: It’s all about the "Après-Surf" vibe. People spend the day catching waves and the night dancing on the deck with a craft beer and a slice of their famous wood-fired pizza.
The Community: This is the primary gathering spot for the Taipei and Yilan expat communities. You’ll hear a dozen different languages being spoken as people from NTU, NCCU, and the local surf shops all mingle under the stars
The "Southbound" Struggle: If you are reading this on Thursday and don't have an HSR ticket Train ticket to Kaohsiung or a bus to Kenting yet—good luck! Expect the "Southbound Expressway" to be a parking lot. Consider sharing a car with housemates to split the gas and the "traffic jam karaoke" time. If you know you are heading out of Taipei for this period it is always best to book tickets as early as possible since even night buses are also booked out or if you have time leave during non peak times.
Sun Protection: The southern sun in April is no joke. Pack plenty of sunscreen, or you’ll return to your share house on Monday looking like a cooked shrimp
One of the best things about the Waiao party is the journey.
The Train: Skip the traffic jams on the Xueshan Tunnel! Grab a local train from Taipei Main Station to Waiao Station. The tracks run right along the coast for the last 20 minutes, offering some of the best ocean views in Taiwan.
Pro-Tip: Bring a light jacket! Yilan can get a bit chilly and misty in the evenings during the April "Spring Break" transition.
