Experiencing , one of taiwan would famous festivals Pingxi sky lantern festival as foreigners .

March 3rd was the official climax of the 2026 Lantern Festival in Shifen, and even with the classic mountain drizzle, the scale of that event is hard to put into words until you're standing on shifen pingxi lantern square.

Despite the light drizzle (which is almost a tradition in the mountains of Pingxi), you witnessed what many call the "River of Stars.

🏮 Shifen & Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival 2026: Pro-Tips for the "Pingxi Rookie" (2026 Edition)

Ranked by the Discovery Channel as the second-largest New Year’s Eve celebration in the world, the Pingxi Lantern Festival is more than just a photo op—it’s a deep cultural reset.

📜 The "Need to Know" History

The sky lantern (or Kongming Lantern) wasn't always for wishes.

  • Military Roots: Invented nearly 2,000 years ago as military signals.

  • The Pingxi Story: In the 19th century, villagers in this mountainous region used lanterns to signal to their families in the hills that it was safe to return after bandit raids. Today, that "all clear" signal has evolved into a global symbol of hope.

🚉” Need to Know” How to Get There (Transportation Tips and event tips)

if you go without any pre -reading or without friends who have been there you will get lost and the night will end without you lifting a single lantern. i have been the prior year so i was able to secure tickets for my first time friends

Getting to the mountains is part of the adventure, but it requires planning.

  • Time - If on the day ,you are free from responsibility ,it is recommended that you go early to get the lantern release tickets in the morning, 7am-12pm. you maybe can get tickets later in the evening but it's not guaranteed and you will be waiting until late into the night for your turn .

  • No of friends - <2-5 per lantern,  go with friends since the lantern is pretty big requires at least 2 persons to hold down before launching.
  • The Train (TRA): Take a train from Taipei Main Station to keelung Ruifang Station. From there, transfer to the Pingxi Line local train.  Note: In 2026, the Pingxi Line has been under heavy maintenance, so always check the TRA website for current shuttle bus replacements.

  • Festival Shuttle Bus: During the main event days (Feb 27 & March 3 /2026 ), special shuttles run from MRT Muzha Station. check this schedule It’s about NT$50 for the ride up, and the ride back to Taipei is usually free!

  • Pro-Tip: Expect the trains and buses to be packed. If you aren't a fan of "sardine-style" travel, consider a private tour or a shared car service.

  • Getting in line- since there is so much people you can't just show up , they release lanterns in batches , so check your ticket number and batch release time so you can be in the line when it is your release time otherwise you will miss it.

  • Be camera ready- Of course you want to take pictures and videos, and don't miss the moment ,figure out the angle or who takes pics/video etc so when you are releasing you already are camera ready.you don;t have much time .

🎒 Essential Packing List for Pingxi

  1. Rain Gear: Pingxi is famous for its "misty" weather. Bring a lightweight raincoat , umbrella or poncho.

  2. EasyCard: Make sure your EasyCard (or iPASS) is topped up with at least NT$200 to avoid the long lines at ticket machines.

  3. Comfortable Shoes: wear comfortable water proof shoes  , You might be walking on uneven mountain roads. Leave the heels at home!

  4. Cash: While some shops in Taipei take cards, the food stalls in Shifen and Pingxi are strictly cash.

🤝 The Magic of the Crowd: Meeting "The Traveler"

One of the best things about living in Taiwan  is the community,

While we were scrambling to understand how to get lanterns at the Pingxi shifen information center , we met a solo american student traveler who was looking for a group to join. In the spirit of the festival, we teamed up! We shared shared laughs and snacks with a group of international friends , we helped each other think up ideas to write on the paper, and ended up lighting our "balloon" together.

It’s moments like these—meeting and making foreign friends from across the world and sharing a wish—that make the international experience in Taiwan so special.

🌏 How Big is "Big"?

You probably felt the crowd, but the numbers are actually staggering:

  • Mass Attendance: During the main release nights (like the one you attended), up to 80,000 to 100,000 people descend on the tiny mountain town.

  • Global Recognition: It’s been named one of the "14 Festivals to Attend Before You Die" by Fodor’s and is a staple on CNN’s travel lists.

  • The "Horse" Influence: In 2026, the Year of the Horse, the focus is on "galloping forward," which is why you likely saw many horse-themed lanterns and decorations yesterday.
