Taipei metro has allowed more use of QR code to ride the metro . This is a significant update for anyone living in or visiting Taiwan in 2026. The launch of QR code payments at Taipei Metro gates on January 3rd marks a major shift toward a cardless society.
Here is a comprehensive, guide you can use covering everything from airport arrival to these new high-tech payment methods.
Navigating Taiwan has never been easier. As of January 2026, the transportation network has received a massive digital upgrade. Whether you are a student moving into a share house or a tourist landing for the first time, this guide covers everything you need to know about getting from Taoyuan Airport to the heart of Taipei and beyond.
So you just arrive at Taoyuan Airport for the first time , and you want to get to Taipei, Once you clear customs, your first goal is to get to the city. How to get there?
The fastest way to Taipei Main Station and cheapest (if your luggage is not too much) (approx. 35–39 minutes on the Express train ,approx 50-60 minutes by commuter train). Not suitable when ( the taoyuan metro line closes after midnight so arrivals after midnight require taxi or the limited night bus from taoyuan airport ) (if you have too much luggage and no one to help you move it.)
Payment Methods: Unlike the city metro, the Airport MRT has accepted contactless credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, JCB) and mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) for years.
QR Option: You can also use the "Transit QR Code" found in various local payment apps or buy a single-journey token.
Pro Tip: If you have a lot of luggage, look for the purple "Express" trains; they have dedicated luggage racks and fewer stops.
The taoyuan airport also has convenience stores selling metro cards used in taiwan.
This is a significant update for anyone living in or visiting Taiwan in 2026. The launch of QR code payments at Taipei Metro gates on January 3rd marks a major shift toward a cardless society.
you arrive at Taipei main station and you want to get to your stay location.
If you are in Taiwan for a short period , then you can go to the convenience stores or the in the metro station designated services center buy a physical easy metro card for $100nt , then charge it at the charge station or any convenience stores 7/11 , Family mart, Ok mart etc. Alternatively you can buy a one use token at the metro station metro card charging station and tap and go on to the metro . Metro cards are still a great way to get around the city and come in many great designs.
Starting January 3, 2026, the Taipei Metro Click to open side panel for more information and city buses officially entered the QR code era. You no longer need a physical card to ride the Taipei or New Taipei Metro.
Supported Apps: Easy Wallet (悠遊付), iPASS MONEY, icash Pay, JKO Pay (街口支付), and PX Pay Plus.
How to scan: Open your app, select the "Ride Code" (乘車碼)—not the regular payment code—and scan it at the yellow sensor boxes on the gates.
Frequent Rider Rewards: Good news! If you use QR codes, you still qualify for the 5%–15% monthly cashback rewards, which will be credited to your app account on the 5th of the following month.
Currently, most credit cards and Apple Pay (Express Transit) are in a "pilot phase" at select gates (mainly for Taishin Bank users). The full rollout for all international credit cards and seamless Apple Pay "tap-and-go" is expected in July 2026. Until then, stick to the QR apps or a physical card.
If you are a student or a long-term resident, the TPASS is your best friend.
The Deal: For NT$1,200 per month, you get unlimited rides on the MRT, Light Rail, city buses, YouBike (first 30 mins free), and even the TRA trains within the Keelung-Taipei-New Taipei-Taoyuan area.
Where to buy: You can set this up on a physical EasyCard at any MRT information counter or use the "Megacity Pass" function in the Easy Wallet app.
If you’re heading south to Taichung, Tainan, or Kaohsiung, you have two main choices:
Vibe: Think of it as a "bullet train." Taipei to Kaohsiung in just 90 minutes.
Payment: Use the "T Express" app to buy tickets. It generates a QR code that you scan directly at the gate—no paper ticket needed.
Vibe: The classic rail network. Slower but more scenic and reaches smaller towns.
Update: Most TRA stations now accept EasyCard/iPASS taps for local trains. For "Limited Express" trains (like the Tze-Chiang), it’s best to book a seat via the TRA app and use the digital QR ticket.
Vibe: Inter region buses that go from one Central bus station hub to another, ie.Taipei bus station near Taipei main station to Taichung bus station. Similar price to TRA but more scenic. Also have some Sleeper-bus. Very scenic
Update: if you go to the bus station , require you to buy a ticket at the bus station to show to driver . Of course is there is no station , you can scan with your card.
Landing at the airport is just the beginning. To truly live in Taipei, you need to master the "last mile" of your commute. Here is how to handle the daily grind using the city's most efficient tools.
Even with the new 2026 QR code updates, most long-term residents still find a physical card useful for backup or for specific student discounts.
The EasyCard (Yōuyóu Kǎ): The "King" of Taiwan. Buy it at any 7-Eleven or MRT station for NT$100. You can download the app to use the newly announce qr code transit functions.
IPASS (Yīkǎtōng): The " rival to the easy card. Functions exactly the same. Buy it at any 7-Eleven or MRT station for NT$100. You can download the app to use the newly announce qr code transit functions.
3. ICASH 2.0 card/( Ài jīn kǎ) Exactly the same. Buy it at any 7-Eleven or MRT station for NT$100.
The Student EasyCard: If you are a student at a local university, your Student ID is usually your EasyCard. This gives you deeper discounts on buses (NT$12 instead of NT$15).
TPASS (Monthly Pass): As mentioned before, if you commute more than twice a day, the NT$1,200 monthly pass is non-negotiable. You can "load" this onto your physical EasyCard or use the Easy Wallet app.
You will see yellow and white bikes everywhere. These are YouBike 2.0 and electric YouBike.
They are useful for the trips in between metro stations or can replace metro stations , also good places where metro don't reach or just nice bike strolls with friends . They are fast always clean and regularly maintained.
How to Register: You cannot just "hop on." You must register your EasyCard IPass card or Credit card on the phone app or at youbike kiosk . If you having trouble understanding the setup we recommend visiting youbike service center for help.
Requirement: You need a Taiwanese phone number to receive a verification SMS.
The Cost: Extremely cheap. Usually NT$10 for the first 30 minutes, and if you have a TPASS, the first 30 minutes are often free (subsidized by the city).
Pro-Tip: Check the tires and the brakes before you tap! If a bike is broken, locals turn the seat backward to signal others not to use it.
You’re right—the "big" airport transport is important, but for daily life in a share house, it’s the YouBikes, buses, and metro etiquette that really matter.
Taipei’s MRT is world-famous for being clean and punctual. To keep it that way, there are strict rules:
No Food or Water: The moment you cross the "Yellow Line" at the gates, you cannot eat, drink, or even chew gum. Fines start at NT$1,500.
The Backpack Rule: On a crowded train, take your backpack off and hold it in front of you or put it between your feet.
The Dark Blue Seats: These are "Priority Seats." Even if the train is crowded, people usually leave them empty for the elderly, pregnant women, or those with disabilities.
